Pattani Governor Survives Bomb Attack

BANGKOK, April 26 (Bernama) -- Pattani Governor Nipon Narapitakkul survived a bomb attack in Pattani today.

Pattani Police Chief Pol Gen Pichet Pitiserttapan said a five-kilogramme homemade bomb was hidden in a motorcycle and remotely detonated as the governor's car passed by in Panarek district, Pattani, at 11.40am.

"The governor escaped unhurt, except for a temporary hearing problem caused by the impact of the explosion," he said.

The governor was travelling to his office after officiating at the opening of an English course at Aljamiah Al-Islamiah religious school in the district when the attack occurred.

Two other passengers in the car also escaped unhurt and the car sustained minor damage, he said.

More than 4,000 people have died since suspected separatists resumed their armed campaign seven years ago to seek independence for the three provinces, Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala.
